Deer Park golf event helps youth sports; upcoming garden club plant sale

0

Terrific, if a bit windy, weather greeted golfers for the second Deer Park Youth Sports Invitational Golf Scramble at The Battlefield Golf Course Friday afternoon.

With people stepping up with Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsorships, the city’s youth organizations will once again be the big winners. From football to baseball, whatever funds are received will be used to improve facilities or perhaps provide scholarships for a child who otherwise would not be able to afford the registration fee.

On the fifth hole, the Deer Park Seminoles football program had set up a large tent with drinks and snacks and even a challenging game in which golfers tried to accurately kick a football into one of three holes worked into a safety net.

Upcoming Plant Sale

It’s spring which means the butterflies are majestic in their flight, the bees are fine-tuning their pollination and the flowers are starting to bloom.

This is where the Deer Park Petal Pushers Garden Club comes into play. It can enhance the colors of anyone’s yard when it hosts a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.

The sale will take place at the city’s Theater Arts/Count Building, 1302 Center St.

A portion of the proceeds go toward scholarships for Deer Park High School students.

Online pre-K registration in progress

Deer Park ISD is currently doing online registration for pre-kindergarten to enroll new students. Registration officially closes on April 30.

There are six steps to complete a child’s enrollment and get the ball rolling toward an eventual high school diploma.

One must provide proof of residency, provide a state-issued birth certificate, provide immunization records with the child’s social security card, and finally, a parent’s ID such as a drive from Texas.

If a family has already registered a child, this means that they have a family access account and can return to this account. Once in your account, click on the “online registration for new students” button.

Contact the Early Years Center at 832-668-8390 for more information or visit the website at ecc.dpisd.org.

For regular kindergarten registration, it closes on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13. On Tuesday it will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday it will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The school district emphasizes that online registration does not replace the physical presence of kindergarten registration at that specific child’s school. If a child is registered at the Early Childhood Centre, it is not necessary to participate in Kinder registration. A child will automatically be enrolled in DPISD Elementary School.

Deer Park High School is looking for a new varsity swim coach. Chris Moralez is stepping down, ending a long career that has improved the program in more ways than one.

Deer Park’s varsity softball team is now No. 5 in the nation according to the latest Max Preps Top 25 High School Softball Rankings. They climbed three places from the previous week. The so-called No. 1 team in the nation, based in Indianapolis, just started its season last Tuesday.

Now 8-0 in the district, the Lady Deers have so far edged their district opponents by a count of 116-5.
