Asia-Pacific dominates the global phosphorus market. Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for their growth, but more importance is given to nitrogen fertilizers because they are needed in large quantities and give an excellent response. Rock phosphates are used more with the highest market share in 2021. Dry phosphate fertilizers dominate the market. The United States is the second largest producer and consumer of phosphorus in the world. Russia accounts for only 3% of the global phosphorus fertilizer market share. The majority of phosphorus reserves are in China, Morocco, South Africa, Jordan and the United States.

Carbohydrate-rich plants like potatoes need potassium for tuber growth. Potato yields can be increased to 8 to 10 tons per acre if potassium is applied at the rate of 600 to 700 pounds per acre. Apart from this, tomatoes, berries and cane fruits also require more potassium fertilizer. By using potash, wheat contains more protein and carbohydrates. Cereals require a balance of nitrogen and potash to achieve full yield response to applied nitrogen. If the supply of potash is limited, the uptake and use of nitrogen will be restricted.

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the phosphorus fertilizer market landscape. The confinement imposed to combat the spread of the pandemic has limited the production and supply of fertilizers, thus affecting agricultural production activities. Producers are solving the challenges caused by the pandemic and adapting to the changing dynamics of the sector. Although the government has exempted agriculture from the lockdown; the most severe impact has been on demand for end-use products, limiting market opportunities for fertilizer producers. Several companies have reduced the production and supply of their fertilizers. Many small-scale production units have been forced to close. Labor transit was another problem as migration was restricted and transportation was also affected. In addition, China banned exports of phosphorus fertilizers which affected countries that depended on them for their resources. To drive down fertilizer prices in its home country, China has banned exports until 2022.
